This is the School of Trout’s hands-on class for anglers who want to improve their fly fishing skills. If your fly casting falls short of your expectations, or if you’d truly enjoy tying your own flies, then this is the class for you. We will also focus on awareness, and mending, and creating perfect dry fly, nymph and streamer leaders, and making better presentations. Whether you’re new to the School of Trout, or whether you’re a SOT alumni who has taken multiple classes with us in the past, we’re confident you’ll leave the Henry’s Fork with refined skills that will serve you well going forward.

DETAILS

Dates:  August 18th - 23rd, 2024

Location:  Our home for the Essential Skills class will be the exceptional TroutHunter facility on the banks of the Henry's Fork in Last Chance, Idaho.  To learn more about TroutHunter, please visit their website.  (We’ll conduct the fly tying portion of the class in one of the historic Railroad Ranch buildings at Harriman State Park, which is just down the road from TroutHunter.)

Instructors:  John Juracek, Brant Oswald, Pat McCabe, Steve McFarland & Todd Tanner. There’s also a chance that Craig Mathews may swing by and talk fly tying for a bit. (If you’re not familiar with all of our instructors, be sure to take a look at our instructor’s page.)

Curriculum:  This class is for anyone who hopes to improve or refine their fly fishing skills. We will focus on fly casting and fly tying — our goal is for everyone to catch a trout on a fly that they tie themselves — and we will also emphasize on-stream awareness, as well as on-the-water and aerial mending, leader construction, and presenting your fly. (Students without prior fly tying experience are welcome to join us, as are beginning and intermediate fly tyers hoping to improve their technique.)

Lodging:  Our students will stay in comfortable rooms at TroutHunter.  Double occupancy rooms are standard. As long as space is available, we will offer the option of upgrading to single occupancy rooms for an additional fee.

Food:  All meals at the class are included.  Students will order from TroutHunter's stellar Last Chance Grill menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Drink:  We'll be serving beer & wine with dinner.  There will also be a cash bar available for those who choose to partake in something a little stronger.

Gear:  While we can provide rods and reels for the class, we strongly recommend that students bring their own fishing gear.  We’re happy to provide a list of recommended gear and equipment.  Students should also plan on bringing a portable fly tying vise and fly tying tools for this particular class. (Please let us know if you need a hand selecting a vise and the proper tools.)

Travel:  Students are responsible for the cost of travel to and from Last Chance, Idaho.  The closest airports are in West Yellowstone, Montana, which is about a 40 minuted drive to TroutHunter, and Idaho Falls, Idaho, which is approximately a one hour and 15 minute drive.

Cost:  The cost for the Essential Skills class is $6,950 per person, double occupancy.  That includes the entire class curriculum, along with lodging & meals at TroutHunter.

Not Included:  Students are responsible for purchasing their own fishing licenses, any alcohol beyond the beer and wine included with dinner, and their travel expenses.  We also expect our students to tip the hardworking and conscientious TroutHunter staff who serve our meals and clean our rooms.

Recommended Items:  We will send students a full list of what they'll need for the class upon their acceptance.

Prerequisites: We don’t have prerequisites for the Essential Skills class. Still, please keep in mind that the class is designed for anglers who’d like to refine their skills and enjoy more success on the water. If you’re new to fly fishing, you might consider our Tao of Trout class instead. Also, if you have a hard time with basic fly fishing knots, please let us know ahead of time so we can help you master this particular skill.

Cancellation Policy: We require half of the cost of the class as a deposit when a student is accepted. Until that deposit is received, a spot at the class is neither confirmed nor guaranteed. The remainder of the tuition is due on or before June 1st. All payments, including deposits, are nonrefundable unless the School of Trout is able to secure a replacement to fill the spot at the class. If a replacement is found, SOT will offer a full refund, less a 10% cancellation fee. While we will work to find a replacement in the event of a cancellation, we can not guarantee that we will be able to do so. As a result, we recommend that everyone who is accepted for a class purchases trip insurance that covers their costs in the event of a cancellation or another problem.
